Brian Shaunfield, store manager at a Charlotte-area Lowe’s, says it’s also important to factor in extra space around the fridge for ventilation. Another popular feature is a door-within-door, aka “a panel on the refrigerator door that opens to storage built into the door,” he explains. “A door-in-door saves energy because you don’t need to open the full door to access the in-door bin.” You can also consider features like built-in ice makers and water dispensers, too. The price of a refrigerator “depends on finishes, features, size, and other factors,” explains Shaunfield. “If you are buying a stainless-steel side-by-side or French-door refrigerator, for example, the price typically ranges from $1,100 to $2,000. But that can go much higher or even lower depending on the features you’re looking for.” For fridges with significant extra features, you can spend upwards of $3,000 or $4,000, but of course, there are plenty of high-quality options for far lower price tags. There are several highly reliable refrigerator brands you can choose from, including “Samsung, Whirlpool, LG, Fridigaire, and GE,” says Shaunfield. All of these brands, he adds, are well-known and trusted and sold by most major retailers. According to Shaunfield, a refrigerator can last up to 13 years on average.
